THE first team of Paarl Cricket Club made a good start to their campaign in the Boland Cricket Board’s 45 over competition on the weekend when they annihilated Worcester United by 175 runs at the Parys Sportsgrounds.

Paarl’s batsmen showed their class when they scored a massive 265/5 in their allotted 45 overs.

The home side was always in control as they scored well over five runs an over.

Lee-Roy Walters (66, 4x4 and 2x6), Tenysson Botes (41, 5x4) and Alfredo Adams (78, 7x4 and 3x6) made valuable contributions with the bat.

Worcester’s innings got off to a shaky start as they struggled to keep their heads under the pressure caused by Paarl’s bowling attack.

With their score on 54/7 in the 24th over, the game was in the bag for Paarl.

Lyndon Fredericks (3/18), Clint Philander (2/8), Hein Adonis (2/26) and Adams (2/2) ensured that the visitors were all out in the 33rd over with only 90 runs on the board.

Paarl II crushed Worcester II by 159 runs on Saturday with Dave Clarke (79, 4x4), Courtley Pharaoh (37, 5x4) and Graham Adams (39, 5x4 and 1x6) helping the home side to reach 202 (all out) in their innings.

Two five-wicket hauls by the opening bowlers Craylon Rhaman (5/20) and Denver van Reenen (5/19), restricted Worcester to a shameful 43 runs.

On Sunday Paarl I defeated Young Peoples I in their own backyard.

Young Peoples chose to bat after winning the toss, but they were soon in trouble on 53/5 after losing five wickets in the first 21 overs.

A hundred-run partnership between Dominic Daniels (78*, 5x4 and 3x6) and Mark Borchards (60, 3x4 and 2x6) added some respect to the home team’s score.

Young Peoples reached 192/6 in their alotted 45 overs with Clayton August (2/38) being Paarl’s best bowler.

The visitor’s openers Alfredo Adams (37, 6x4) and Tenysson Botes (61, 8x4) again showed their class as they shared an opening stand of 102 before both were in the dressing room with the score on 104 in the 23rd over.

Carlo Crotz (32, 4x4) and Lee-Roy Walters (41*, 3x4) made sure that Paarl defeated Young Peoples for the second time this season.

Paarl reached the target in the 44th over.

Paarl II beat Young Peoples II by five wickets at Parys.

Young Peoples batted first and scored 209/9 with L Davey (25, 6x4), H Barron (37, 2x4), A Victor (25, 4x4) and L Julies (44, 2x4; 3x6) the main contributors.

Abrian Williams (2/34) and Dave Clarke (2/35) performed well with the ball for Paarl, but a poor start to their batting innings saw them losing two wickets in quick succession with the score on 23.

Graham Adams (60*, 4x4) and Clarke (79*, 3x4) added 103 runs before Adams retired hurt due to an injury he picked up while fielding.

With three overs to go, Paarl needed 26 runs to win.

Kurt Martin hit 13 runs in the 43rd over before losing his wicket off the final ball of the over.

The winning runs were scored from the 1st ball of the final over.

Paarl III (173/10) defeated Paarl East (112/10) at Parys by 61 runs. Byron Walters (51, 4x4) and Brenton van Schoor (50*, 3x4 and 3x6) were the home side’s best batsmen while A Seconds (3/45) was the visitors’ best bowler.

Paarl’s Eugene Crotz (3/34), Sebastian Seale (3/26) and Elton du Plessis (3/10) ensured Paarl East only managed to score 112 runs.

* On Saturday Paarl Cricket Club I and II are playing against Malmesbury at Malmesbury and Parys respectively. The third team is travelling to Touws River whilst the fourth team is travelling to Pniel to play Coronations.

Paarl II will also be playing against Van der Stel II at Pen Basson in the final of the Premier Reserve League 60 over competition on Sunday.

Steak platters (R35) will be on sale at the clubhouse on Saturday.
