THREE churches and an NGO pulled together recently to provide volunteers for a massive clean-up, repair and gardening project at the Mbekweni Clinic.

For the first time in known history the Strooidak Kerk even cancelled an 08:00 Sunday morning service to practically practice their faith.

Three congregations - Strooidak, Toringkerk and Durbanville Community Church - encouraged their congregations to give their time and materials to start an extensive repair and maintenance project at the clinic, all for free.

Monte Christo Ministries provided the volunteer co-ordination on the project when 120 people showed up and gave over 1000 hours last week.

Even the overworked clinic staff, doctor and security guard pitched up all week-end to voluntarily help with the clean-up project, along with some of the youths from the congregations and kids from Mbekweni.

The outside of the building was painted, the lawns were mowed and landscaping taken out and replanted and layers of trash were removed.

Inside the building walls were scrubbed, floors cleaned, furniture washed and one section painted.

The roof was spray-washed and scraped with many rotting sections replaced.

Supplies and materials were provided by Paarl and Durbanville businesses which included replacing of broken windows, new fascia boards, paint and paint supplies.

The clinic provides care for 50 000 Mbekweni residents with only one full time doctor and 12 nursing and administrative staff.

The project has been a great success, but is still only about halfway completed.

Financial support, volunteers and supplies are still needed and a second work weekend is being planned in December.

Anyone who wishes to provide contributions, material or volunteer time, may contact Nancy Cowie of Monte Christo Ministries on 082-854-6058.
