FIVE houses have been completed since the relaunch of the long delayed Project 2 Housing Project in Mbekweni.

These beneficiaries are from the White City hostels and will move into their new houses soon.

According to the Drakenstein Municipal Council’s portfolio holder for housing, Arthob Petersen, another 20 houses should be completed by the end of the year.

“Altogether 30 conventional houses and six stone houses have been completed since 2006 in Project 2,” Petersen said.

The Mellon Housing Initiative has been employed to build the rest, a total of 730 houses in Project 2.

The municipality hopes to complete 120 houses by March.

Die Departments of Local Government and Housing and Correctional Services have a joint venture in which the inmates of Drakenstein Prison and Allandale Prison assist with construction of the houses.

”This is part of a skills development programme for prisoners to allow them to become self-sustainable when they are released,” Petersen said.
