INSTEAD of working eight hours on a Thursday, mountainbikers can celebtate tomorrow’s public holiday - Youth Day - by riding their bikes from 09:00 to 17:00.

A mountainbike team relay event will take place on Delvera farm situated on the R44, about 6km from Klapmuts.

A fun 7km lap will ensure fast racing, quick lap times and lots of activity in the transition area.

Riders can take part in teams of four or two riders and many will attempt the race solo.

The event is perfect winter endurance training in preparation for big events like the Knysna Festival in one month’s time.

The response has been great and lots of riders from Paarl will take part, among them Huguenot Cycles who have entered a few teams and solo riders.

The riders from Paarl did exceptionally well at the 24hour events in 2004, also winning the Open men’s team category.

“So many mountain bikers asked when the next 24hour MTB team relay event will take place, so we decided to give them a winter taster in the form of an 8-hour race,” said organiser Meurant Botha from Dirtopia.

This event will introduce the 24Hour concept to new riders but will exclude the nightriding and camping aspect.

“It is simply too cold in winter to go through the night!”

Categories include Open Men, Mixed teams and Juniors. Entry fees range from R63 to R80 per rider and can also be done on the day of the event.

Riders will attempt to ride as many laps as possible in the 8-hour time frame and the lap will be fairly easy to ride with mostly jeeptrack and three sections of flowing singletrack.

The team relay events are very social as it builds camaraderie between teammates and riders.

All teams and social riders can bring family and friends along for support and spectators are also welcome.

The public are also welcome to hike to the top of Klapmuts hill on the day. Buy a R15 permit at the Trail Centre and see more of the mountainbike action.

Other facilities on Delvera farm include accommodation, restaurant, wine and cheese tasting and a nursery.

The first of two 24-hour Western Cape mountainbike events will take place in Malmesbury on 10 and 11 September.
