A GROUP of eight cyclists, including Grant McDermott from Wellington, have embarked on a journey from Cairo to Cape Town with the aim of promoting Africa’s diversity and raising significant funds for the fight against poverty.
The team’s journey began in January in Cairo, from where they followed the Nile River through to Khartoum, Sudan.
They then cycled into Ethiopia, visiting a Millennium Promise village on the north-east border.
Continuing south their journey took them to Addis Ababa, central Tanzania and on to Lilongwe on the western side of Lake Malawi.
They then continued down Living- stone’s way into Victoria Falls, exiting Zambia into Botswana and then into South Africa where the Garden Route will lead them to their final destination, the Waterfront in Cape Town which they expect to reach on Saturday morning at about 10:30.
Funds raised during the 12 500km Millennium Cycle for Change will go to the Millennium Promise, an NGO that works with impoverished communities to transform lives and end extreme poverty in Africa.
According to Millennium Promise over 1 billion people around the world live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than R7 a day.
The team has conducted extensive research in developing a route that will be safe, yet challenging and beautiful. Cycling between 60km to 200 km per day, the team have been tested both body and soul.
