IT all started when they did a bank statement enquiry at their local Nedbank branch - now Paarl SPCA is the proud holder of the regional Local Hero title and a R10 000 cheque. Guin Lourens, a committee member of Paarl SCPA and a Nedbank client, took the opportunity to do the motivation. The Local Hero Programme recognised and acknowledge individuals who make a difference in their community through volunteer work. Lourens stated in her motivation that the SPCA’s mission is to prevent cruelty to animals, by way of education, law enforcement, and pro-active and reactive activities. “This means that we are concerned with the welfare of all animals. Although the SPCA is a non-profit organisation (charity), it is run on business principles. “The Paarl SPCA receives no state subsidy and therefore relies on donations to fund all activities,” she says. They regularly visit the poorest areas of Paarl, Gouda and Saron with their mobile clinic, to see to the health of pets.
