Death of Fanor Carolissen

A WELL-KNOWN Paarl sportsman and boxing trainer, Fanor Carolissen (72), passed away on Wednesday after a short illness. At the time of his death he was president of WP Amateur Boxing. He was also president of Riverstones Rugby Club for 19 years and an honorary member of Paarl Cricket Club. Carolissen was an avid boxer, rugby and cricket player (Foresters and Ottomans) in his youth. At the age of 14 he was known as “Wonder Boy” when he won the WP bantam weight boxing title. Later he was the senior amateur welter weight champion. He was involved with boxing administration for 42 years and was president of SA Boxing (Sacos) for ten years, even hosting Mohammed Ali. He was also founder of the Boland Boxing Association and president of Western Cape Amateur Boxing. He retired as foreman of the Saturn Stainless Steel factory a few years ago. He is survived by six children, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The service will be on Wednesday at Our Lady’s Catholic Church in Barbarossa Street at 13:30 (viewing from 12:30).
