Athlone Trust bursaries for 2009
2008-11-20
FOR the past ten years the Athlone Institute Trust (AIT) in Paarl has been granting bursaries and bursary loans to promising and needy students who are permanent residents of Paarl and Mbekweni. By the end of this year the Trust, via the Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund (AIBPROF), will have paid out bursaries and bursary loans at various tertiary institutions in South Africa, to 890 students, totalling R2,5 million. These institutions range from institutions in the Peninsula and the Boland to institutions in the Free State, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. Only undergraduate students who are registered at tertiary institutions, which have been accredited by the Council on Higher Education, will be considered for a bursary or bursary loan. Although they have applied for a bursary/bursary loan with the Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund, students must pay their registration fees at the institution where they are going to study, at the beginning of the academic year, out of their own resources. That means that no student who has not been registered for a course for the 2009 academic year will be considered for a bursary/bursary loan. Next year the AIBPROF will again award a number of bursaries to tertiary students who are in their second year of study and onwards. Bursaries will be awarded with academic merit and/or financial need of the applicant as primary considerations. A maximum of 20 bursary loans will be made available to first year students with serious financial need, who have obtained a minimum aggregate of 950 in the Final Matriculation Examination. An applicant for either a bursary or bursary loan must: * Be a permanent resident of Paarl or Mbekweni and a parish member in good standing of one of the members of churches of the Athlone Institute Trust or a parishioner in good standing of any bona-fide denomination in Paarl, * Enrolled for full-time undergraduate studies at a tertiary institution which has been registered with the Council on Higher Education, * Have been promoted after the last year of study, * Show potential to study successfully and be willing to be involved in some form of community service in the Paarl/Mbekweni area under the supervision of the Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund. * First year students who matriculated at Klein Nederburg Senior Secondary School, Paarl, who register for a qualification in AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University (US) may also, for the first time, apply for the Erna Witbooi Bursary which must be utilised to pay all expenses for textbooks for the first year of study. In addition, Erna Witbooi, an ex-student of Klein Nederburg (a Masters Graduate from the US, part-time lecturer at US and currently researcher in AgriSciences in France and Europe), offers a one year mentorship to the student who qualifies for this bursary (enquiries 021-862-6767). Application forms and information for the Athlone Institute Trust Bursaries/Bursary Loans are available from tomorrow, at the offices of the following churches in Paarl: Bethel United Congregational Church, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Immanuel UR Church, St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Zions UR Church and from the Rev Simon James, 50 Poole Road, Van Wyksvlei, Wellington 021-873-4794, or phone the Vice Chairperson at 021-862-6767 (office hours).
