DREAMS do come true, even after a person is no more.“It was always my mother’s dream to see this day of Vuyokazi Frans becoming Umakoti (married) the traditional way.

“Today would have been my mother’s birthday,” says Vuyiseka Xobiso, whose mother Hilda passed away suddenly in September.

Her brother died a few days later in a car crash while travelling to the funeral in Paarl.

In memory of Hilda Xobiso, the family decided to have the Ustiki (wedding) of Vuyiseka’s brother Fuzile last Saturday, on her birthday.

“It is still painful. I am not yet used to the fact that she is not with us any more,” says Vuyiseka.

The couple were married the legal way and the family also welcomed Vuyikazi into the family according to Xhosa custom.

After the elders talked to the bride, Vyiseka gave a new name to her sister-in-law as a sign of welcoming her to the family Xobiso.

Her new name is Nophumzile, meaning “now the family will rest” after all that it went through last year, losing two members in one week.

“Every time we celebrate the wedding anniversary we will remember my mother’s birthday as well. I know she always wanted to see this day, but we lost her before it could come true”.

Bridegroom Fuzile Xobiso father of three and husband of Nophumzile agreed “I will always remember my mother and brother on this day,”

His father Mzwandile, said that a lot had happened last year: “But we meet today to celebrate a new member of the family.”
