Municipal worker cleared of charges

Municipal worker cleared of charges

2009-02-19

A DRAKENSTEIN municipal driver still sits comfortably in his position after being cleared by an internal investigation of charges of negligence.

Ashley Williams caused thousands of rands of damage when he ploughed into a house in Phokeng Street, Mbekweni, with a municipal vehicle last year.

According to eye-witnesses, Williams staggered out of the vehicle and then collapsed, apparently under the influence of alcohol.

The police are still awaiting the results of the blood tests taken from Williams on the evening. This will then determine whether a criminal charge will be laid against him.

But the municipality has completed its internal investigation and due to the lack of evidence could take no disciplinary action against Williams.

And in the mean time, the owner of the house, Nobesuthu Xegwana, is still waiting to find out who will be footing the bill of R40 000 to repair the damage to her home.
