Death of well-known Paarlite
2005-08-04
A WELL-KNOWN Paarlite whose family was synonymous with photography, Yvonne Fisher (77), died recently in Fish Hoek.
Fisher was the granddaughter of the famous photographer James Gribble (originally from Cornwall), and custodian of the glass negatives which were her legacy from her grandfather and father.
She attended La Rochelle school, next to the family’s photographic studio (located where the Protea cinema building is today).
She became an apprentice to her father, Harold Gribble, in the business James Gribble & Son, and married Dennis Fisher of the local printing company Fisher & Sons.
Harold donated that rich historical legacy to the local archive, the Drakenstein Heemkring. In his will it was stated that this legacy was never to leave Paarl.
When Harold Gribble retired, Yovnne took over the business which had moved to the building currently housing Bernina.
She was so busy that her father came out of retirement at the age of 83 to help her.
She was a familiar sight in Paarl on her scooter until she retired to live with her son.
She is survived by her sons Keith and Gregory, their children and a great granddaughter.
To view extracts from the Gribble Collection, visit the Drakenstein Heemkring at 214 Main Street (872-9145) on week days 10:00 - 12:00.
