Death of well-known Paarlite
2009-03-12
THE doyen of the cooling and refrigeration industry in the Paarl area, Andrew Smook (86), passed away last weekend after a short illness. Smook started work in the electrical business at his father’s company AL Smook in Paarl. In 1950 he ventured on his own and started the first refrigeration business in the area, Paarl Refrigeration. These were the days when refrigeration was something quite new, and the norm was to deliver boxes of ice to homes and businesses for cooling purposes. Soon Smook’s business started to grow, as refrigeration advanced, especially within the wine and fruit industry. His sons later join- ed his venture and the company’s name was changed to Smook & Sons, and later it became the refrigeration giant, Cold Fact. Smook was very much involved with the business until he retired at 73. He and his wife Sheila-Joan have recently been living in Gordon’s Bay. He is survived by his sons, Leonard, Ivan and Anthony, daughter Esther, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Another son, Johnny, passed away last year. The funeral takes place today at 15:00 at the Methodist Church in Strand.
