Gentle giant laid to rest in Paarl

Gentle giant laid to rest in Paarl

2009-03-19

ANOTHER chapter in the Smook dynasty has come to an end, with the passing away of Leonard Smook (55).

Leonard’s death comes in the wake of his younger brother Johnny’s death in December, and that of his father ten days ago. All three men died of cancer.

Leonard fell ill towards the end of last year, and due to his illness, his daughter Luchelle’s wedding was brought forward to this past weekend, so that he could attend the ceremony.

This was however not meant to be, as he passed away on Friday morning, a day after his father was buried.

Leonard, who matriculated at Paarl Boy’s High, was a well-known Paarl businessman, sportsman, and musician.

He started his career as a salesman for a clothing company and then entered the world of insurance.

Here he spent many years, before joining his brothers at Aslo Properties where he became known as a property salesman of note.

As a younger man he played rugby for Paarl Rugby Club’s first team, and was a force to be reckoned with on the rugby field.

He may be best remembered as a remarkable musician, having been involved in bands since the age of 16.

But those who were close to him will remember him as being the gentle giant who was everybody’s friend.

Leonard is survived by his wife Lorette and daughters Luchelle (29) en Rozanne (25).

The funeral service is in the Paarlvallei NGK today at 15:00.
