THE juniors of Paarl Girls’ High School came up trumps last week, when they received the performance excellence in outcomes award from the Western Cape Education Department. These awards for primary schools in the Western Cape are based on meritorious academic performance by schools in literacy and numeracy tests which were held between 2004 and 2008. A total of 1066 primary schools within three districts were assessed during this period, during which 74 119 learners were required to write tests in mathematics and literacy. Primary schools that consistently produce excellent results, as well as those who had shown the greatest improvement over the years, were rewarded in various categories. Girls’ High won the overall award for performance excellence. In this category, awards are made to schools with excellent performance in numeracy and literacy over the period 2004 to 2008. Girls’ High’s pass rate has been 100% over this period of time. They received a certificate and R12 000 for the purchase of educational material. Grade 3 educator, Thea Grindlay, said that they were overwhelmed by the school’s excellent results:“We know that we are good, but this is really a feather in our cap.” * Pniel Primary (schools with more than 600 learners) and Nondzame Primary (schools with less than 600 learners) also received awards for schools that have shown the greatest improvement over this period.
