2009-06-11
ON Saturday, family, friends and ANC members honoured Elizabeth “Rocky” Mafikeng (90), a well-known Struggle stalwart, who passed away on 28 May. Her funeral was held at the Mbekweni Community Hall on Saturday and she was laid to rest at the Heroes Acre at the Parys cemetery. Rocky’s active political life started towards the end of 1941, when she joined the Food and Canning Workers’ Union and became a shop steward. Between 1954 and 1959 she served as president of the African Food and Canning Workers’ Union (AFCWU) and as branch secretary in Paarl. To promote the workers’ struggle for liberation and better working conditions, Rocky joined the Paarl branch of the ANC and in 1957 she became the vice-president of the ANC Women’s League. She also served on the regional committee of the National Executive of the South African Congress of Trade unions (SACTU) and was also one of the founder members of the Federation of South African Women.
