Death of well-known Paarlite

A WELL-KNOWN Paarlite who was known for her active involvement in the community, Brenda Pagel (71), died at her home on Thursday night of a heart attack. Pagel (née Garisch) grew up in Paarl and trained as a nurse after matriculating at La Rochelle. She married Jo Pagel and after her children were born, focused on voluntary community service. She became a fund-raiser for Paarl Child Welfare and Cansa, where she served on the Western Cape board. She was also the founder and energetic driving force behind the Libra Ladies’ Club for the past 38 years. She launched the Paarl Junior Town Council and served as assessor at the local magistrate’s court. In addition, she served on the board of the ACVV and the La Rochelle Old Girls’ association, where she was chairperson at the time of her death. For the last decade she has been chairperson of the Drakenstein Heemkring, local history archive in Main Street. In her spare time she was involved in the publishing of two cookery books and a genealogical book about the Garisch family, which was published in 1990. Pagel received numerous community awards for service to the local community. The first was in 1985 when she received an award for community service from Rotary. In 1997 she received the Berg River community award for education. In 2005 she received acknowledgement for her community service from the Paarl branch of the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurverenigings (FAK) in 2005. In 2006 she received an award from Drakenstein mayor Herman Bailey for her cultivation of leadership amongst local youngsters through the activities of the Junior Town Council. She is survived by three children: Peter-Ben (Paarl), Lynn van Mazijk (Durbanville) and Dagmar van Zyl (Cape Town) and five grandchildren. The funeral was held yesterday in the Strooidak Church.
