Rebuilding lives

EIGHTEEN youths from Mbekweni have joined the Realistic (Rebuilding and Life Skills Training Centre) course that started three weeks ago in Mbekweni. This is part of a four month reintegration training course that helps youths to be productive, law-abiding citizens. This week ten of them joined a group from Guguletu for an orientation camp in Wellington. Realistic is a community-based organisation located in Guguletu which was established in 2004 by a former employee of the South African Department of Correctional Services (DCS) who realised that many ex-inmates re-offend after they are released from prison. “To intervene in what is widely viewed as a cycle of crime, Realistic offers holistic support (therapeutic support as well as vocational training) to ex-inmates as well as youth at risk,” said Tsepiso Mphulanyana, the project administrator in Mbekweni. “This orientation camp for the young people will be followed by a four month part-time rehabilitation course. After that they will receive a certificate and help with other community projects. “It is our mission to create a crime free society by supporting ex-inmates and youths at risk to to get back into mainstream society. We want them to become productive, law-abiding citizens. “The staff is the driving force of this group and they also frequently inform the parents about the progress of their children,” he said.
