Culture of reading starts in Gouda
2009-10-29
"TODAY is the start of a process to create a culture of reading amongst the kids and adults of Gouda,” said the Executive Director of Social Services at the Drakenstein Municipality, Tommy Matthee, at the official opening of the Gouda library on Saturday 24 October. Matthee emphasised that local residents are the beneficiaries of the library and must look after it. Cape Provincial Library Services granted R2 million for the erection of the new building which will serve a population of 7600 people. Stefen Wehmeyer of Provincial Library Services promised that the library would receive four new computers, so that there will be access to the internet. More books will also be made available for the library. Drakenstein Executive Mayor Charmaine Manuel said that the people of Gouda had raised their need for a library in an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meeting in April 2007. The ward councillor for Gouda, Johannes Thomas, had embarked on the process to seek a lasting solution, while the library was then housed at the Bakerville Primary School in Gouda. Due to space problems at the school, the library moved to a prefab structure in March last year. This prefab structure will be moved to Groenheuwel to serve this community. “The people of Gouda spoke and Drakenstein Municipality budgeted for it. And today we celebrate it,” Manuel said.
