Celebrate wine harvest and help charity
2010-03-11
THE Wellington SPCA recently staved off the imminent threat of closure, thanks to a crucial injection of funding from a neighbouring association. It is, however, only a temporary reprieve for this small, but active branch, which relies entirely on public donations and the selfless commitment of stalwart volunteers, to continue the legacy of compassionate work begun in the early 1950’s. Distressed by the plight of the beleaguered Wellington association, a local wine-farming family realised that the harvest festivities - which take place every year in the town - presented an excellent opportunity to help raise sorely-needed funds for the SPCA. From Saturday 20 March to Monday 22 March, the farm Eventide - from which, on a clear day, faraway Table Mountain can be glimpsed - will be open between 10:00 and 17:00. For a modest entry fee of R10 (which will be donated to the Wellington SPCA), members of the public will have the chance to meander through the enchanting, serene hidden enclaves of the country garden, and enjoy refreshments, along with a variety of sweet and savoury home-bakes (proceeds also go to the SPCA). Interesting local handcrafts and other produce will be available via select stalls, the owners of which have agreed to contribute 10% of sales to the association. In addition, the SPCA will have several raffles running throughout the event, including two coveted tickets to the Elton John concert at Kirstenbosch on 24 March. Next door, beautiful Mischa Estate will be holding an all-weekend wine festival, to support the SPCA. This idyllic venue, with its panoramic mountain views and inviting freshwater swimming pool, will beckon festival-goers between 10:00 and 18:00. Lush sprawling lawns, a Moroccan-style tent, funky live music by “Holiday Murray”, gourmet cuisine, sundowner cocktails and Mischa’s wines - all promise a great experience while aiding a worthy cause. In addition to donating 10% of the weekend wine sales to the Wellington SPCA, a boxed selection of Mischa wines will be raffled twice a day on the estate for the duration of the festival. Says John Barns, “We’re just a family business. This is our small contribution towards ensuring that the local community has continuing access to the services of a proud Wellington institution.” For information on the Mischa Wine Festival and Eventide Open Garden, contact 021-864-1020 or info@mischaestate.com. Armbande is beskikbaar by Wellington Inligtingkantoor of enige deelnemende wynkelder gedurende die naweek.
