Come to the rescue
2010-07-15
FIVE donkeys in Franschhoek are currently looking for a new home, after they were rescued from poor conditions at a petting farm in Paarl. These donkeys came to the attention of Anne Stone in Franschhoek after the McGregor Donkey Sanctuary received a phone call. Anne and her team of volunteers arranged that the donkeys were removed to Franschhoek where they are now living at their temporary home at Bo La Motte. The Drakenstein Veterinary Hospital (a specialist equine hospital), farrier David Frost and Professor Sybrand van den Berg, an equine foot expert, all helped to attend to the donkeys’ hooves and their general health. Soon Eddie, the stallion, was gelded, and the hooves of one of the mares, Muriel, were x-rayed. The x-rays showed deterioration of the pedal bone inside the hooves because they had not been trimmed regularly. A prognosis of whether or not she will be pain free can only be made in three to six months’ time. Anyone who can offer the Franschhoek Five a new home, can call Anne Stone of Auberge la Dauphine (021-876-2606) or visit the McGregor Donkey Sanctuary’s stall this weekend at the Bastille Day festivities.
