“I love telling a story through my designs,” says Wellington fondant sculptor par excellence, Dot Klerck, who is one of the 30 finalists in the magazine Ideas' creativity competition. The winner of the “Celebrating Creativity” competition will be announced in the September issue of the magazine, which goes on sale next week. The competition forms part of the 30 year celebration of the magazine, which was known as Women’s Value until it was relaunched as Idees/Ideas a few years ago. Readers were asked to think creatively and to submit their most inspiring knitting patterns, scrumptious recipes, beautiful stencils or creative handiwork, along with a step-by-step photography guide of the whole process. Up for grabs is a holiday in Knysna and other holiday goodies. Her entry is of a teddy bear sitting atop a 30cm patchwork quilt cake of lacy pinks and maroons and padded hearts that looks so real it seems almost a shame to have to cut through the blanket of icing. The process took her more than ten hours to complete. Together with her twin sister Grace, Dot runs a novelty cake and wedding design company. Their signature style is the hand modelled fondant work with which they decorate the wedding cakes and cupcakes ordered by their growing following.
