Paarlite writes ground-breaking study-guide

LOCAL journalist and educational writer, Sonja Burger, has just completed a ground-breaking English Home Language study guide for matriculants. Burger has written ten English text books and study guides since 1991, but is very excited about her latest contribution to education. What makes this new guide, On the go, published by Heinemann Publishers, unique, is that it has been designed to cater for a generation that is technologically driven. On the go consists of an MP3 CD and a handy companion book, which cover everything learners need to know for their matric exams. Students simply download the content of the CD onto their MP3 player, iPod, laptop or any other sound system and they are able to learn, literally, on the go. The audio guide is accompanied by a 64-page Companion Booklet, which includes important terms, exercises with questions, exam tips and techniques. Important concepts are explained through mind maps and illustrations, and a practice exam paper is included at the end of the booklet. “This has been a very exciting project because it combines audio with text,” says Burger. “Young people engage with their world in new ways and I believe that we have to harness technology to facilitate learning. “This guide provides all they need to know for comprehension, visual literacy, summary, language and the writing sections of the English exam in MP3 file format. “Now they can literally study wherever they go.” On the go guides are also available to Grade 12s in business studies, chemistry, geography, life sciences, maths literacy and physics. After completing her studies in languages and drama at the University of Stellenbosch and a German speech course at the Goethe Institute in Germany, Burger settled into teaching, first at Rand Park High, and then at St Stithians College in Johannesburg. As a young teacher she already saw the necessity to develop relevant, creative learning material. In 1999 she started collaborating with an Australian company to develop SA Weblinks Online, a database service that compiles useful educational web sites for schools. This busy mother of two still finds time to write lifestyle articles for publications such as Farmer’s Weekly, Fynproe, Country Life, Wine, Wineland, Die Burger and Garden and Home. And her children are an integral of her writing of study guides, as they must first give her the green light before she is satisfied with the end product.
