Community Square launched

ON Wednesday 1 December, the Drakenstein Municipality held a festive launch of the Groenheuwel Community Square. The day started with a 5km fun run for municipal staff, primary school children and community members and a 2 km funwalk for children from the surrounding Early Childhood Development Centres. Approximately 2000 people participated in the various activities held over the three day site launch The development was a pilot project of the Community Services Department. This multi-focused project is aimed at the development of both physical, educational and recreational community spaces. This multi-functional space serves not only the needs of children, but can also be a meeting and relaxation space for the elderly. The Municipality also plans to present programs such as patch gardening, drumming, photography and labour intensive job creation opportunities linked to the site. The Launch programme itself carried the theme of HIV/Aids through the story-telling, puppet shows, poetry readings and HIV/Aids awareness stalls. At the opening, is was announced that a similar project is planned for Wellington in the near future.
