2011-02-24

A VEHICLE which was stolen in Wellington on Friday was recovered barely an hour after it had disappeared. This was thanks to alert members of the police’s K9-unit as well as a hidden Tracker security device.

A thief stole a white Toyota Venture belonging to Sunfield Homes which had been parked in Church Street. On return and discovering the theft of the vehicle, the complainant ran to the police station to report the incident.

On activation of the tracker, various police vehicles across Cape Town were immediately informed of the stolen vehicle and members of the K9-unit noticed the stolen Venture on the R300 highway.

Another police vehicle joined in the chase and when the perpetrator saw the long arm of the law closing in on him, he stopped the vehicle and tried to flee on foot.

But there was no stopping the police and he was quickly tackled to the ground and arrested. Shortly after this the car was returned to Wellington police station, where it was reunited with its owner.

The perpetrator, Theo Qona (30) from Cape Town, was placed behind bars.
