A LOCAL artist has been invited to exhibit her work at this year’s highly acclaimed Florence Biennale in Italy.

Both up and coming artists as well as established artists from around the world are invited to exhibit their art here at this prestigious exhibition.

Adele Fouché, who runs an art studio in Main Street, Paarl, near the Strooidak Church, was flabbergasted when she received the elite invite via e-mail.

“I thought it was a joke and almost deleted the mail.

“Only once I had received a large envelope from Italy with all the documentation and details, did it sink in.

“The Biennale Committee has a panel of experienced judges who judge artists’ work over the internet. Most artists would kill for an opportunity like this, so you can imagine how proud I feel.”

This year, 650 contemporary artists representing 84 countries will be exhibiting more than 2500 artworks in Florence.

Adele studied drama at the University of Pretoria and had a brief stint working for the SABC in Johannesburg, before starting a family.

She had always had a love affair with fine art, but her father did not want her to study art. She however continuously spent much of her spare time creating ceramic art works and painting.

After moving to Cape Town with her family she fell in love with the Boland and they decided to move to Paarl to a better environment, including excellent schools for her four sons.

Here she studied art under Cornelia Smook and Hannes van Zyl.

Today Adele has an established gallery and studio, where she also offers art classes.

Adele’s work concentrates on the use of light and colour while portraying harmonious subjects.

The Florence Biennale could open many doors for Adele, but now there is still much work to be done to gather the funds to have her paintings transported to Italy for exhibition.

“I have to cover an artist’s fee, as well as shipping, storage and insurance. The names of sponsors will be displayed on the Biennale’s website, as well as in the catalogue.”

The Biennale takes place this year from 3 to 11 December.

The general consensus is that you haven’t made it as an artist if you haven’t exhibited overseas - thus this will be Adele’s big break-through.
