Wanted: your hand-me-downs to help the poor

THE Salvation Army Island of Hope Centre was erected as a Rotary centenary project in 2006 through funds raised by local and international Rotary clubs and local donors.

At the end of February last year, the Island of Hope Centre’s programme of caring for young children was closed.

Major George Pavey, a Salvation Army officer with qualifications and many years of experience in child and youth care in South Africa, has been working in Paarl since October to restore the programme and to meet the need for safe care for abandoned, orphaned, neglected and abused children.

The shop that has been selling second-hand clothing has remained open, successfully operated temporarily by volunteers from the Rotary Club of Paarl, and now by permanent staff.

The success of the shop in Breda Street is providing some of the much needed finance for the centre programme. It is open from Monday to Friday (08:30 to 17:00) and Saturday mornings.

In order to continue with the success, the shop urgently needs a continuing supply of donated second-hand goods.

The Island of Hope wants to urge people to keep them in mind when they have unwanted goods from clothing to white goods, bicycles to sewing machines.

Currently interactive work-shops for social workers and roleplayers in the community are being conducted by the centre. It is hoped to commence full operation from 1 May.
