Ommiberg fest a big success
2011-03-17
MORE than 4 000 visitors poured into Paarl on Saturday, to join in the festivities of the Ommiberg ‘Round the Rock’ wine fest. Ideal weather conditions and a relaxed atmosphere made for an ideal fun-filled, one-day getaway. Farm-hoppers and wine-lovers were greeted on 13 local farms with the sight of guests reclining on shaded lawns and decks, with local unfiltered or vintage wines in hand, picnic fare spread generously and foot tapping to headline bands Jesse Jordan, aKing and Zinkplaat. The traditional focus on pairing current vintage wines with Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) proved as popular as in previous years - the expansion this year of the shuttle service ensuring the safe return of patrons to their starting point on the day. Festival organiser and Paarl Vintners CEO Annelize Stroebel said, “We’re pleased with the growth shown by the festival year on year. “The participating wine farms invest a lot of time, money and effort – along with the many local suppliers that are always involved. Our challenge now is to grow the event, while still retaining the country feel.” Ommiberg 2012 is scheduled for 10 March next year - those who need convincing can keep their eyes peeled for the Fiesta feature due to air on DSTV Kyknet within the next few weeks.
