Nomination of candidates

Nomination of candidates

2011-03-17

THE Electoral Commission in the Western Cape will accept nominees for candidates to contest the Local Government Elections until 17:00 on 25 March.

In order for a South African citizen to nominate an independent ward candidate, the nominator must be a resident in the municipality where the ward is located and be registered as a voter on that particular municipality’s segment of the voters roll.

In addition to these legislative requirements, the nominator must submit 50 signatures of registered voters in the ward where the nominated candidate will contest the election. If the nominated candidate will contest more than one ward in a municipality, then each ward must have its own nominator.

The person nominated as a candidate must accept the nomination in writing as per a prescribed IEC form. The nominator must also submit the nomination details on a prescribed IEC form.

Persons who wish to contest under a political party banner must be represented by a registered political party. The requirement for 50 signatures is then not applicable. However, both an independent nominated ward candidate and a political party nominated ward candidate must be registered voters in the particular municipality where the election is contested.

Once documentation is submitted, the nominator will not be able to amend or substitute documentation. The cut-off time of 17:00 on the final day for submissions is not flexible nor negotiable.

It is important to note that submissions must be made at the office of the IEC at the Paarl town hall, for Drakenstein nominations. Documentation for candidate nominations can be downloaded from the IEC website at www.elections.org.za or at the nearest IEC office.

For nomination by a registered political party, the deposit payable by bank guaranteed cheque is R2 500 (district council R1 500). Independents pay R1000.
