Hospice has been caring for the community for 20 years

2011-05-05

THE Drakenstein Hospice recently celebrated 20 years of care for bed-ridden patients in the Paarl/Wellington area.

The focus of their work is on providing a quality, holistic, palliative care service for the most vulnerable members of the community who are infected and affected by life-threatening illnesses and life-limiting conditions.

They employ a number of staff members, including nurses and a social worker, while there are a number of volunteers who act as care-givers. Services are free.

Their fundraising is supported by the Hospice Shops in Paarl and Wellington, where they sell high quality clothes, bric-a-brac, books, shoes and all sorts of goods donated by the community.

An exciting new initiative to help the homeless has involved the shops. Fullcircle aims to uplift the homeless through job creation and life skills training. Coupons will be for sale at various outlets in the district which can be given to the homeless to exchange for clothes from the Hospice Shops or food from dedicated food distribution points.

Every three years, a COHSASA survey is conducted in which the service delivery and holistic patient care is audited.

The Drakenstein Palliative Hospice is currently rated as a 5 Star Hospice by HPCA and as such is required to exhibit a high level of quality and compliance with standards in all aspects of the service.

They need volunteers to help in the shops, to answer the phone at the front desk, to assist with day-care programmes and to help with school work, especially reading, at Butterfly House in Paarl East.

If you wish to attend a volunteer course and make a difference in the community, contact Karen Barkley at Hospice on 021-872-4060.

A homecare service for persons requiring daily or part-time care is also offered.
