THE developer JHE Construction wishes to develop land in School Street which formerly formed part of the St Stephen’s Anglican Church burial ground.
]
The graveyard is thought to date to 1855 when the land was acquired by the Bishop of Cape Town.

In 1973, as a result of the Group Areas Act, the St Stephen’s Church was obliged to sell its properties in Noorder Paarl, including the cemetery.

Although documentation at the Paarl Municipality indicates that the cemetery was exhumed in the 1970s prior to its sale, excavation in 2003 indicated that the cemetery was only partially exhumed.

The developer would like to identify the descendents and family members of the persons buried in the St Stephen’s Church cemetery or any other persons who have information concerning the burial ground.

Any organisation or individual wishing to be consulted, should send their names, addresses, contact details (phone, fax and email) and relevant information identifying persons buried on the site by 12
November to Mary Patrick (Heritage Consultant) at Cape
Archaeological Survey on email maryp@method1.co.za or phone her on 761-4744 or 083-208-0648.
