A LEGENDARY figure in the business sector of Paarl, Gordon Dick (79), has died after a short illness.

Gordon was travelling in Chobe, Botswana, last week with a friend, Margaret Sage, when he fell ill.

He was airlifted to the Millpark Hospital in Johannesburg where he died in his sleep early on Tuesday morning.

Gordon, a born Paarlite, started out in business in his family retail business, Dick & Allsop, which later became James Dick & Son.

This business was later transformed to the well-known chain Dicks Furnishers. In the mid-1980’s Dicks was bought by a large retail conglomerate, after which Gordon entered the property world with Johan Louw of Caprop, specialising in developments.

His daughter, Michele Brewer, said, “He was a real character and was the last of the old school gentlemen.”

His wife Shirley died in 2007. He is survived by four children, Shane, James, Michele and Jessica and six grandchildren.
