THE 20-year-old Sigmonne Adams from Paarl is not only living her dream, but the dream of many other aspiring models her age.

This hazel-eyed girl has gone from competing in her school’s beauty pageant to her first shoot for Cosmopolitan and Glamour magazines.

In 2008 Sigmonne was crowned Miss La Rochelle and from there on, there has been no stopping her.

“My first time in the spotlight was when I won the Miss La Rochelle pageant in 2008, soon after that I was contacted by my current agency, Infinity Models, and signed with them.

“I have loved the camera since I was a little girl, it has always been a dream of mine.”

Sigmonne officially started to work as a model while in matric. After shoots for Cosmopolitan and the Glamour magazines she was featured in fashion and beauty editorials for brand names including Edgars, Foschini, You and Ackerman’s stores as well as their magazines.

“I’ve also done jobs for L’Oreal Beauty and recently did the Maybelline New York calendar launch in Cape Town.”

This year brought new challenges and great opportunities for the young model, who is the face on the cover of 021 Magazine this month.

And now she is branching out into commercials.

Soon she will be seen as one of the leads in the new Allan Grey commercial, which, according to her, is the biggest job she has had so far.

“This was definitely one of my best experiences in the industry so far. I shot for about four days with call-times from 05:45 and only ending at midnight on some evenings. Nevertheless, I would do it all over again.”

Sigmonne has also done photo-library jobs for Scandinavian and German companies and last year she worked for Pep and appeared in one of their TV commercials.

She does mostly fashion and beauty, but would not mind doing a bit of runway as well.

“Fashion shows are really exciting, but I enjoy shoots more, because each one is so different and you get to transform your normal look to something new and never seen before.”

Sigmonne not only has the looks, but the brains too, and is currently a second year student in a degree course in accounting at the University of Stellenbosch on a full academic scholarship.

“I am very blessed to have received an academic bursary for my full course, so at the moment completing my degree is my priority.

“Once I have completed my studies I will definitely consider taking a year off to concentrate on modelling full-time, maybe even internationally.

“But my mom says, you can only model till you’re 30, but you can be a Chartered Accountant till you’re 60’. I’ll take her word on that for the time being.”

Sigmonne finds that the modelling industry is not just fun, because a model has to learn to face rejection as well as criticism.

“Modelling is definitely harder than most people think. It can be lots of long hours and also a lot of travelling and sacrifices, away from your friends and family.

“Yet seeing yourself on a cover, of a magazine or on television is an incredible experience and makes it all worthwhile.”
