Air-conditioners go missing in Main Street of Paarl
2011-07-07
BUSINESSES in Paarl, especially in Paarl’s Main Street, are being warned to secure their outdoor air-conditioning units. This comes after a spate of theft which has left many businesses high and dry. Police spokesperson, Capt Louise du Plessis, said that these units are being stolen and stripped of the copper piping which is then sold as scrap. “It then costs business owners thousands of rands to replace the units. “We are following leads as to the perpetrators, but ask the public to find alternatives to secure these units.” Any information pertaining to such thefts can be given to du Plessis on 082 850 9614. * Water meters have also recently been targetted by scrap-meatal thieves. And when these get stolen, the home-owner has to pay the Municipality dearly to have it replaced. Builders say that the only way to secure these are now to cover them with a cement casing, with only enough visible space for municipal meter readers to be able to take a monthly reading. On the other hand, no harm can be done to totally submerge the meter in cement.
