Blending art and wine

Blending art and wine

2005-10-27

THERE’S nothing bland about a bottle of wine - not if Paarl artist Tertia du Toit gets her hands on the label.

Under her paint brush, sensual women heave wine barrels on their backs and challenge you to uncork their wares.

While the wholesome Chardonnay girl smells of apples, gooseberry and lime, the dreamy Shiraz girl is enfolded by the aroma of vanilla, cherry and red plums.

“I paint a picture of the atmosphere of the wine, the taste and the aroma. The origin speaks for itself,” says Tertia.

The girls are part of exhibitions, a collection of paintings that dance around the idea of womanhood.

“My paintings focus on the female figure, milkmaids and Madonnas, an abundance of life’s pleasures.”

With the strong colours and dramatic poses she invites whoever dares, “to indulge”.

The artist was handpicked and Juno Wine company was founded in Paarl with the aim of bringing “voluptuous value to the traditional wine industry.”

They have been maturing since 2004, with other members of the team Oliver Kirsten and Tertia’s husband, former Boys’ High teacher Johan du Toit.

“To bring wine to the bottle, is already an art,” says Tertia.

Newald Marais, former Nederburg winemaker, creates the wines for the Juno label at Bonnievale.

The choice of Juno as brand name came as no surpise, with Juno being the month of marriage, and the Roman goddess Juno being the protector of feminine sensuality. “Juno’s girl is a fresh Cape farm girl, chosen to co-incide with wine’s traditional description as round, soft, full-bodied,” smiles Tertia.

Her art already adorns many households - with designs on bottles of jams, spices and book covers.

Art and design is managed amid her role of wife and mother of four.
She manages fine, thank you, because she believes: “Jane has to climb her own ropes, as long as Tarzan is no ape!”

And when is she most inspired?

With a paintbrush in the one hand and glass of wine in the other,
naturally.
