LOCAL neurosurgeon, Dr Adriaan Liebenberg, is a man on a mission. Not only has he managed to shed more than 70 kilograms of unwanted weight, but in the process he has written a book about his weight loss process, The Brain Surgeon’s Diet. And with this book Liebenberg plans to show many the way to a new lease on life. Liebenberg is regarded as a brilliant brain surgeon and one would think that he had everything life had to offer him. But inside, he was deeply unhappy about being ‘grossly’ overweight. “Two years ago I weighed 161 kg, suffering from amongst others, immensely high blood pressure. “My self-esteem was at an all time low and I was having a lot of problems with relationships with my family as well as my colleagues. “I had read about many diets which glamorously tell you that you will lose 10 kilograms in six weeks. “But being a medically minded person I knew that this was not the answer in the long run. I was looking for a permanent solution to weight loss.” Being a neurosurgeon, Liebenberg looked deeper into the psyche and found that being fat is a state of mind and that with some basic adjustment and balances, one could alter this to become the person one wanted to be. Liebenberg came across a formula which determines precisely what a person’s daily kilojoule intake should be according to their gender, weight and height. And with further investigation, he discovered that with the help of Avena Sativa, commonly known as oats, weight loss a reality. “There is no quick fix for losing weight. I lost mine after two years and I have adjusted my way of eating permanently. “Exercise also plays an important role, but this does not mean that you have to run a marathon. Just taking a walk each day will already help.” And according to Liebenberg, the brain surgeon’s diet is nothing to do with starving oneself. On the contrary, he says, you actually eat a lot, but it is what you eat. He for example, has a big sweet tooth, but he no longer stocks chocolates in his house. When the urge for sugar hits him, he binges on fat free yoghurt. His book also gives basic guidelines on buying products which one enjoys eating, but that have less kilojoules and fat. And when one does have a craving for a food such as pizza, have one, but eat a healthier thin-crusted version instead of the immensely fatty, fast-food one. Today Liebenberg is living life to the full. He now has the physical appearance he wants and has new found energy to follow his dreams. “Being at my target weight and living a full life with my wife and children is something that money cannot buy.” Liebenberg’s book is available at his surgery at 48 Main Street, Paarl, or visit his website www.brainsurgeonsdiet.com for more information.
