Adult learner of the year

Petros Phelani has received the provincial award for learner of the year in Adult Basic Education (Abet) from the Department of Education. He is a student at the Wellington Learning Centre, where he is currently busy with his last matric subjects. He hails from Lesotho, where he left school in Grade 3. He works at the Department of Transport, where he started literacy classes in 2003. He has spent the last eight years studying part-time to progress to matriculation level, sometimes spending four evenings a week in night school.
