Wellingotn celebrates

‘CELEBRATE WELLINGTON’, a first of many events aimed at increasing awareness of the beauty and rich heritage of Wellington, was hosted by Wellington Tourism and Wine Route on Wednesday 16 November.
The evening event attracted almost 200 guests and was staged at the historic Goodnow Hall, a great example of one of the many ‘hidden’ treasures to be found in Wellington and surrounding areas.
Dr Jurie Joubert, one of three guest speakers at the event, discussed the history and development of the town and covered the many reasons why Wellingtonians have much to celebrate.
Dale Isaacs, chairperson of Sonke, spoke about the importance of tourism to every citizen of Wellington and the need for the people to stand together to make a difference.
A similar theme was continued by Dr Mike Fabricius (former head of Captour), who applauded recent efforts by the new Tourism and Wine Committees to rejuvenate the town.
As part of the Homegrown Campaign promoted by the Winelands District, Fabricius commented on his passion for ‘local is lekker’ - local food, local personalities, local hospitality, local history.
He pointed out that every rand spent by a tourist in the town benefits every member of that town, and that every one of us has a role to play in the tourist experience.
“Every business in your town should be a member of the local tourism organisation, because everyone benefits from it”, stated Fabricius.
Guests were treated to a taste of Wellington: a wide variety of local food and wine. Every restaurant, caterer and wine farm in the area had the opportunity to present their distinctive dishes and their wines for the evening’s celebration.
Wellington string quartet Da Kaap O Ensemble complemented the food and wine with their classic repertoire.
With a setting sun and a beautiful garden as a backdrop to the celebration, guests were also entertained by the Mbekweni Black Bafanas singers and Wellington mime artist Timothy Snell, who is well-known to visitors to the V&A Waterfront, where he has been entertaining tourists for the past 20 years.
