Firm heads needes

IT is vitally important that education has firm, capable and informed school principals, that play a strategic leadership and development role in schools.
That is the opinion of the National Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, who addressed a symposium for senior school managers in Paarl last week.
The event at the Nelson’s Creek Wine Estate on Friday was attended by well over 400 school principals and other senior staff members.
The day focused on the development of educational leadership with service as key to effective education.
Pandor referred to sport, education on social issues such as violence and alcohol, the status of corporal punishment, and respect for diversity and racism.
She noted that principals are the pivots around which schools turn. “Principals cannot work alone. They need to be receptive to parental and community concerns,” she said.
She concluded that with the co-operation of the higher education institutions, NGOs and principals as the practitioners, a huge improvement can be made in the quality of the education that schools can provide.
Other guest speakers were Prof Willie Estherhuizen, Prof Brian O’Connell and Dr Allan Boesak.
