Thieves hit tourist at Berg River

A tourist has vowed never to return to South Africa after camping and photographic equipment worth more than R20 000 was stolen from him.
Dave Coleske of Gabarone has been back-packing through South Africa for the past three months.
On arrival in Paarl, Dave set up camp at the Berg River Resort, where he spent the next month.
His idyllic holiday was left in ruins last Tuesday, when upon return he found that all his belongings had been stolen from his tent. He had literally been left with only the clothes on his back, his tent and a sleeping bag.
The alleged robbers gained access to the camp-site by crossing over the Berg River.
Dave was able to catch a glimpse of the young men escaping to the other side of the river on his return.
Also amongst his belongings was his passport, which has now left him stranded in Paarl.
“I have back-packed throughout the world, and nothing like this has ever happened to me.
“Nobody seems to be doing anything about the high crime rate, and even the police told me that there is no use in trying to investigate the matter any further.”
The manager of the Berg River Resort, Ian Badenhorst, said that they had had a problem with theft for years and due to this had employed additional security guards.
“Unfortunately is too costly to guard the entire river front,” said Ian.
He added that they provided facilities in which guests’ valuables could be stored but Coleske had not made use of this.
