Don't withdraw charge

Don't withdraw charge

2006-03-16

OFTEN, people lay complaints at the police station merely for revenge or defamation, and later withdraw the complaint.

In the future the plaintiff will be charged for perjury and be prosecuted if a case is withdrawn.

The police announced this, after it was established that many cases are withdrawn shortly after they were opened.

This leads to criminals taking to the streets again and never being successfully prosecuted for their crimes.

It also demoralises members of the police who spend much time investigating crimes, just to have the case withdrawn and known criminals remaining on the street and contributing to the high crime rate.

* Firearm owners born in the first three months of the year are urged to simultaneously apply for competency certificates as well as for the renewal of their firearm licences, permits or authorisation.

Time is running out, with police only accepting training certificates issued by accredited training providers for renewals, permits or authorisation until 31 March.

It is not necessary to do a practical shooting examination for the renewal of a licence. This applies only to first-time applicants.

Should a firearm owner decide not to renew his licence within the renewal period, he will have to dispose of the firearm before 1 July 2009.

Paarl Police Capt Gilbert Jones (807-4000) has more details about licensing.
