Doctorate received

A RESIDENT of Paarl, Juliana Smith of New Orleans, recently obtained a doctorate in education from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) with a thesis on teacher education for intervention in the commerce classroom.
Married with two children, Smith is currently associate professor in the Faculty of Education at UWC.
Originally from Beaufort West, she has been a resident of Paarl since 1980. She taught commerce subjects at various high schools before joining the staff of UWC.
She obtained an MA in Education at the University of Lancaster (UK) in 1987 with a comparative review on accounting syllabi in secondary education in England, Wales and South Africa.
From 2001 to 2002 she was chief education specialist (co-ordinating the learning area economic and management sciences) at the Department of National Education, before returning to UWC as associate professor.
She specialises in the development of innovative and creative teaching strategies in commerce subjects at secondary school level.
