Never too late to learn

BEING unable to read and write is a great handicap, but there is a solution - literacy night classes are presented at a number of local sites in Paarl and Wellington.
Says Vuyiswa Moko, manager of the literacy centre, "The classes present an excellent opportunity for adults to improve their educational skills in Literacy and Numeracy and to get an Abet qualification."
All the Abet levels, including matric (NQF4), are presented in classes from Monday to Thursday evenings from 18:00 to 21:00.
The learning areas include Language and Communication, Mathematical Literacy, Arts and Culture, Economic and Management Sciences, Life Orientation, Natural Sciences, Technology, Ancillary Health Care and Small and Micro Enterprises.
Among the many local people who attend classes are a married couple, Jonathan and Erika Paulse, who have registered to attend the Abet 4 classes at Dalweide Primary. They are determined to matriculate.
On arriving for their first classes, they brought their young daughter with them as no one was available to look after her while they were at school during the evening. Since then they have made alternative arrangements.
Currently classes can be attended at Dalweide Primary in Groenheuwel, St Alban's Primary and the Safmarine Hall in Wellington and Imboniselo Primary in Mbekweni.
At Langabuya Primary, Abet 1 (basic literacy) classes are given for older folk and pensioners on Tuesdays from 12:00 to 14:00. Skills training like needlework is offerd on Wednesdays. Addtional classes start at Soetendal Primary, Daljosaphat Creche and KWV in April.
The students now total more than 650 from different cultures and backgrounds, with an educator component of about 35.
Registration for classes at any of the sites is accepted until 14 March (phone 868-2809 or visit office number 3 at the old beer hall in Mbekweni)
