Home ravaged by fire
2006-04-12
THE home of Jerry Williams, a sickly 68-year-old Paarlite, was ravaged by fire late on Monday afternoon. The fire, which reportedly was caused by a burning cigarette, completely destroyed all belongings within the house, rendering it uninhabitable despite the fact that the actual building did not sustain any structural damage.
Williams, who had been sleeping, had to be carried outside to safety by neighbours, who saw the smoke rising from his house in Magnolia Street and realised that it was alight.
The sight of the flames prompted them to call the fire brigade, who arrived within minutes, and doused the flames. They were, however, unable to salvage anything from the charred house.
A crowd of neighbours gathered all along the street outside the house, some on the roofs of neighbouring houses, to assess the extent of the damage.
Williams, unable to mobilise himself, was forced to sit forlornly behind the house and bemoan the loss of all his possessions while the fire brigade ensured that all flames had been completely extinguished and attempted to rid the house of the thick smog.
Rendered temporarily homeless by the unfortunate accident, Jerry Williams, his daughter and son-in-law will have to find termporary lodgings.
