Pole dancing is fun

A POLE lot of fun - that is what Paarlites can have with the new craze of pole-dancing.
Colin Sprake (35) is a former university rugby player from South Africa, and also the brains behind a business idea aimed at rekindling women’s femininity and sensuality - pole dancing as an empowering and fun ladies-only event in the comfort of their own homes.
Sprake is now based in Vancouver, Canada, and his business idea, A Pole Lot of Fun, has already spread across nine countries.
Cara Lerm of Paarl is one of the first A Pole Lot of Fun business owners in South Africa. She first came across A Pole Lot of Fun after being invited to a ‘pole party’ in Stellenbosch.
She says: “It was the most fun I had had in ages - we could not stop laughing - and it was great exercise, I was aching for three days afterwards.”
She was so impressed, she immediately applied for her own business.
“It is good clean fun for ladies and girls. No men are allowed anywhere near. It’s extremely easy - anyone can do it. You only have to take off your shoes and jewellery and let your hair down.”
As Apolelotoffun.com puts it, it is “For all women regardless of physical fitness, weight or stature”. You don’t have to be super-fit, young or slim to get to grips with the pole.
She is quick to get rid of misperceptions: “Because it is a new craze in South Africa, there is a definite misconception as to what a pole party is about, because of the former association of pole dancing with strip clubs.
“A Pole Lot of Fun is strictly for girls only - no men are allowed to attend - and at no stage whatsoever does anything more than your shoes or jersey come off!
“There are 12 basic moves (with names like The Wave, The Dip, and The Fireman), which each guest gets to have a bash at. There are boas and wigs to help get into the swing of things.”
For R100 a head, she brings the pole, music, moves, surprise goodie bags, and some gear. Drinks and snacks are for guests to work out. You need comfy clothes, 10 to 12 female guests and a ceiling height between 2,4m (standard height) and 3m, beamed or cement.
