A SMALL business from Paarl, Omni Care, has been selected by Global Business Network to receive the 27th Annual International Award for Technology and Quality (The New Millennium Award).
Out of 7000 companies worldwide, 150 were selected to receive this prestigious award at a ceremony that took place in Geneva, Switzerland.
A Good Samaritan, Bernadette Coetzer from Klein Brak, offered financial assistance that made it possible for owners Rudy and Marina du Plessis to proudly collect their international award.
Omni Car Wash started off on the street from humble beginnings. In the process they developed a product to use on the dashboards of their clients’ cars.
This evolved into a multi-purpose product and the chemical-free polish can be applied to a variety of surfaces including plastic, vinyl, leather, wood, finished fibreglass and coated metal.
In 2004, the enterprise won the Fairlady/Liberty Business Award. With the assistance of Capemac, Casidra and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), they managed to upgrade their infrastructure and improve their corporate image to enter the international market by representing South Africa at a trade fair in Paris.
Says Rudy, a former streetkid, “My wish is that this award will serve as motivation to other entrepreneurs and other streetchildren. Our experiences acquired through our own endeavours can be applied for mentoring. Only an entrepreneur understands another entrepreneur”.
To implement this they have already initiated the Black Business Opportunities Forum.
Both advise entrepreneurs not to be too dependent on institutions by adopting a beggar attitude. Passion, possibility and success lie within you, and only you can make it happen.
Their goal is to create permanent employment and develop a range of products in the near future.
