From Persia to Paarl
2006-08-24
THE colourful Paarl Shiraz festival drew guests from far and wide to Nederburg at the weekend.
Not only could guests choose from Paarl’s outstanding wines, but also from an array of local culinary treats on the menu.
Simonsvlei’s 2004 Hercules Paragon Shiraz came up trumps after beating 39 entries, thus ensuring Simonsvlei’s name on the Santam Paarl Shiraz floating trophy.
In the Paarl Vintners’ Chenin Blanc Challenge, held in conjunction with the Shiraz Challenge, Windmeul Cellar walked away with the honours for their 2006 Chenin Blanc.
Organiser Sandra Lotz of Paarl Vintners was elated: “Although the first of its kind, with some teething problems, I am very satisfied.
“There was much enthusiasm and as Paarl has not had a proper wine festival for many years - it is about time that it is reinvented. We aim to make this an annual event.”
