Sunfield athletes shine
2006-10-26
THE Sunfield home for the disabled at the foot of Bain’s Kloof not only produces very special people, but superb athletes as well.
Occupants of this home recently excelled in the field of swimming, athletics and boccé.
Betty-Lou Miller and Lindi Lupen have returned victorious with success in the third International Down Syndrome Swimming Championships which were held in Limerick, Ireland.
They were amongst 19 swimmers representing South Africa, and competed against 120 swimmers from across the world.
Both Betty-Lou and Lindi received medals for the freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke events, reaping invaluable points which lead to South Africa’s overall victory.
Their coach, Lynette Emslie, is extremely proud of her students.
“These girls have practised so hard at their swimming during the past eight years, and it has paid off.
“They are extremely dedicated and practise throughout the year - winter and summer.”
It is not only Lindi and Mary-Lou who have excelled, but a team of athletes from Sunfield homes will be jetting off to Johannesburg in December to participate in the National Special Olympics.
Esther Botha will be competing in the 50 metre sprint, Ankia Pasotta and Stewart Goodall will be in the swimming pool and Marchard Botes, Ronell van der Merwe, Riaan Croeser and Jessica Holland on die boccé course. Boccé is a game which is similar to bowls.
The team qualified for the National Olympics after stunning performances in their various events during the Provincial Olympics which were held in Cape Town.
They now stand a chance of being selected to represent South Africa at the World Summer Games which will be held in Shanghai, China, next year.
