HORSE enthusiasts from across the country converged on Nelson’s Creek wine estate during the past weekend to participate in the Celebration of Horse and Wine.
More than 20 breeds of horses were put on show during this unique festival, which formed part of the National Draught-Horse Festival.
More than 2000 people attended, enjoying the opportunity to encounter horses of all shapes and sizes up close and personal.
Highlights of the festival included carriage rides by some of the smallest horses in the world, SA miniature horses, as well as the showing of the worlds largest Friesian horse, Bertus B, which was imported from Holland in 2000.
Festival'-goers were shown the finer art of old world crafts during demonstrations of horse-shoe and harness making.
On Friday more than 800 underprivileged children where given the opportunity to make closer contact with the horses, when they were treated to carriage rides and various demonstrations.
Farm workers from the remote Tankwa Karoo demonstrated their fine skills with donkey carts and new harnesses were donated to them.
The organisers of the festival were overwhelmed by the interest which was shown in the festival and believe that it can now only go from strength to strength.
