Keep firearms safe

Keep firearms safe

2006-11-02

A FIREARM owner of Paarl South is facing a charge of negligence, after his firearm was stolen during a burglary at his house.

The 7.65 Star firearm was stolen out of his briefcase.

Annually, more than 3000 weapons are stolen country-wide, and most of these cases are due to negligence.

A spokesperson for the police said that when a firearm is not being carried on the owner, it must be locked in a safe.

If the stolen weapon is used to commit a crime, the owner from whom it was stolen will be held responsible for the crime.

If the gun-owner is found guilty of negligence, he may lose his licence and will be black-listed from ever owning a firearm again.

Anyone who has information about people who own unlicensed firearms, or who should not have a firearm in their possession, can phone Capt Gilbert Jones at 807-4000.
