Death of Myrtle Maart
2007-01-11
WELLKNOWN Paarlite Myrtle Maart (70) passed away early on Boxing Day at her home. She had suffered from ill health for a number of years.
Mrs Maart died less than eight months after her husband Abe, the respected pastor of the Bethel Congregational Church, who passed away in May last year.
Her funeral was held at Elim, the Overberg town where she was born, on Saturday. A memorial service was also held in Paarl last week.
Myrtle trained as a teacher in Cape Town and taught at the Moravian School in District Six before moving to Johannesburg to work for the Christian Academy.
In 1977, when the government forced the Academy to close, she was detained for two months.
On her return to Cape Town she met and married Rev Maart, who was minister of the Bethel Congregational Church, and also active in anti-apartheid circles. He suffered detention in 1985.
She later obtained a BA degree and taught English at Noorder Paarl Secondary.
A good speaker and organiser, she was active in church work and the United Women’s Organisation, caring for the needy and vulnerable in the community.
In an unadorned and unpretentious way she led with great wisdom and was considered a woman of strength, spiritual stature, humility, generosity and compassion.
She is survived by her son André, daughter-in-law Chanelle and two grandchildren.
